A recorder is a musical instrument in the flute family, with a rich history dating back to medieval times. While many newer recorders are made of synthetic material, traditional instruments are made of high quality wood, which require regular cleaning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tub
  • White vinegar
  • Cotton swabs
  • Dish washing liquid
  • Baby bottle brush
  • Soft towel
  1. Step 1

Cover the window of your recorder with your hand and blow through the mouthpiece. This releases dust and loosens clogs.

  2. Step 2

Look for signs of mildew on your recorder. Dip a cotton swab in white vinegar and then apply the swab to the mildew. Let the vinegar soak for 10 minutes and then proceed to the next steps.

  3. Step 3

Fill a tub with lukewarm water. Add dish washing liquid and stir until bubbles form.

  4. Step 4

Remove the block from the recorder. Soak a baby bottle brush in the soapy water and then insert it into the bore of the instrument. Twist the brush carefully to remove dirt from within the bore.

  5. Step 5

Rinse the block and bore with lukewarm water. Dry both pieces with a soft towel.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you've never removed the block from your recorder, ask someone experienced in cleaning recorders to assist you the first time.
  • Allow the recorder to thoroughly dry before oiling it.
  • Don't allow your recorder to stay wet for more than 15 minutes at a time.
  • Refrain from getting the joints wet while cleaning your recorder. If they get wet, dry them immediately.
