How to Coil an Attached Climbing Rope

Properly coiling an attached climbing rope is important for your safety, but it also makes the rope easier to access when you need to. It's an important skill for climbers to master, especially on long climbs when excess rope may be an issue.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by grasping the rope near the attached end. Leave enough rope between the attached end and your hand so that you have enough length to coil. Leave the length in front of you and tossed out straight to avoid kinks or tangling.

  2. Step 2

Coil your attached climbing rope clockwise. Create a coil that is easy for you to handle, not too big or too small. Continue to coil until you're near the end of the rope.

  3. Step 3

Use the remaining 2 to 3 feet of rope to wrap the end around the coil near the top of the attachment at least three times. Slip the last bit of climbing rope through the last wrap to make sure it's secure.

  4. Step 4

Release the coil by unwrapping the last few feet of rope. If you coiled correctly, it should unravel and drop free without tangles or knots.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice coiling attached climbing rope while you're on the ground. After a few tries, you can judge how much length you'll need to coil your climbing rope adequately.
