You can play the best offensive game in roller hockey but if you can't implement a defensive system then you probably won't win. Follow these steps to learn how to implement a defensive system in roller hockey.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know what is going on at all times. Besides watching the roller hockey player who is your defensive responsibility, keep your eye on the other situations in the game.

  2. Step 2

Play a "zone-to-man" defensive system. Split the defensive zone into four quadrants as follows: low left, low right, high left and high right. Guard the roller hockey player who is closest to your zone in a man-to-man coverage.

  3. Step 3

Pressure the puck handler to make a bad pass or shot by blocking his options. Allow one defensive roller hockey player to guard the puck handler while the rest of the team plays man-to-man and cuts off the puck handler's options.

  4. Step 4

Stay on your man at all times and don't let your guard down while waiting for the puck handler to give up a bad pass. If you do, the offense will find a way to get open. Maintain patience at all times.

  5. Step 5

Recruit the best possible goalie. Even the strongest defensive system will give up good chances sometimes. A strong goalie is your last line of defense.
