If you are bringing an new dog into the family, you need to make your home safe. Puppies can easily injure themselves with common items around the house. Follow these tips before bringing your new furry family member home.

Things You'll Need:

  • childproof latches
  • cord runners
  • baby gate
  1. Step 1

    Keep small objects out of your dog's reach. Puppies like to chew and can accidentally swallow things like jewelry and coins.

  2. Step 2

    Replace potentially harmful plants with non-toxic or artificial ones. Some common household plants such as carnations and daffodils are actually toxic to dogs. Consult your veterinarian for a complete list.

  3. Step 3

    Use child proof latches on all lower cabinets to keep dogs from getting into something harmful (such as cleaning supplies.)

  4. Step 4

    Cover electrical cords with cord runners. Chewing cords can cause electrocution.

  5. Step 5

    Use baby gates at the top of stairs. Puppies are a little clumsy and can easily fall.

  6. Step 6

    Keep garbage cans out of reach. Ingesting items found in the trash (like bones or dental floss) can cause serious harm.
