Shopping for a freestanding mirror may sound simple, but it you're looking for a certain level of quality, there are some elements to consider. Knowing what they are will "reflect" your consumer savvy.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Test the base of the mirror to make sure it has a solid, heavy structure that will prevent it from falling over. Check for wobbling or any other unsteadiness.

  2. Step 2

Separate a mirror from a desk or dresser. One way to cut costs on a freestanding mirror is to creatively fashion your own base. Find a mirror that has been removed from another piece of furniture and negotiate a good price. Then add it to your own solidly built base.

  3. Step 3

Make your own frame. Many times, shoppers can find large, unframed glass mirrors at low prices. You can frame the glass yourself by using good wide wood pieces with the proper grooves to hold the glass.

  4. Step 4

Check for any uneven edges. Be sure there are no glass edges or other dangerous spots on your freestanding mirror, especially if you are buying a used model. Go over the piece thoroughly before taking it home.
