How to Deal With Medication Errors

Although most pharmacys get it right most of the time, medication errors can occur. It could be that the pharmacist misunderstood the doctor's writing or the prescriptions got mixed up between two patients. A medication error can have severe consequences, including overdose, so it is important you are prepared to handle the situation if it arises.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Seek medical treatment immediately. If you have taken a potentially dangerous drug, go to the hospital. Let them know that you suspect a medication error and give them as much information about the drug as possible. Bring the medication and/or the labeled bottle.
Step2
Call the doctor who gave you the prescription if it is not a medical emergency. Tell him about the medication you received and ask him to check the information against your records. Notify the pharmacy if you suspect it's the pharmacist's mistake. In certain cases, a medication error can be grounds for a medical malpractice lawsuit. Speak to a lawyer if you believe you have a valid case.
Step3
Report the error. After you have determined that a medication error has occurred, you should report it to the Institute of Safe Medication Practices (see Resources below). Use the ISMP online form on the organization's website.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent medication errors, double check all prescriptions given to you before taking them. The FDA website (see Resources below) can give you information on all over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
