How to Do a Wristlock in Martial Arts

In martial arts, there are three basic wristlocks (pronating, supinating and adductive.) Use a wristlock as a submission hold or to control an opponent. Learn how to add this hold to your self-defense repertoire by reading the steps below.

  1. Step 1

    Become familiar with ergonomic terminology. For example, "pronating" means turning your wrist so your palm faces down. "Supinating" means palm facing up. "Flexion" means wrist bent forward and "extension" means wrist bent upward. "Adduction" means bringing toward the center of the body and "ulnar deviation" means (in handshake position) wrist bent downwards. "Radial deviation" means wrist bent upwards.

  2. Step 2

    Perform a pronating wrist lock by grasping your opponent's hand and pronating his wrist over in your hands. Simply pronate the hand over, then grasp his hand with the palm facing up.

  3. Step 3

    Secure a supinating wrist lock by grasping your opponent's hand while supinating her wrist before holding it with the palm facing up. Exert pressure by flexing the wrist towards your foe.

  4. Step 4

    Execute an adductive wrist lock by grasping your opponent's hand while keeping your arms flexed and near your body. Pronate the hand, wrist and arm then radially deviate your foe's wrist towards his chest.

  5. Step 5

    Practice the wristlock in a controlled environment. Familiarize yourself with the mechanics described above and perform the hold repeatedly until it becomes automatic.
