How to Buy a Used Forklift

The forklift functions as a workhorse in distribution centers, warehouses, lumber yards and manufacturing plants. Many forklifts keep operations functioning smoothly. Buying a used forklift saves business owners money because a used forklift easily functions like a new one, but costs less if you know what to look for.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Ask a dealer about reconditioned used forklifts they have for sale, or recondition it yourself after you buy a used one from a private party.
Step2
Determine what you need your forklift to accomplish before you even go to a private party or used forklift dealer. The amount of poundage you need to lift and how long it operates during the working hours both play an important factor in your purchase. Some forklifts maneuver in wide or narrow aisles better than others.
Step3
Decide on the power source of the forklift that best suits your company-electric, which is powered merely by an on-board battery, or internal combustion that uses a traditional fuel engine.
Step4
Discern your capacity for attachments such as adjustable forks, sideshift and spool handlers for reducing load capacity detailed on a capacity plate fastened to the lift truck. When buying a used forklift, ask about the availability of used attachments, too.
Step5
Think location. Internal combustion motors must be used outside for obvious health reasons. Electric forklifts operate indoors and out, yet require charging after eight hours of normal operation.
Step6
Rent a few different models to familiarize yourself with the makes and models that are available. Once you determine the best type, some companies offer the option to purchase the rented forklift at the price of a used lift.
