Rocking chairs have been popular in America for hundreds of years, both as a form of therapeutic relaxation and as a reliable instrument for lulling children to sleep. Use the following tips when deciding to buy a rocking chair for your home.

From Quick Guide: Sitting Pretty: Chairs
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine where the rocking chair will be located. Indoor rockers can be upholstered or recliner style rockers. Outdoor rocking chairs should be constructed of a durable wood or metal. Make sure the space you've selected is large enough to accommodate a rocking chair, as they need room than stationary chairs to move without bumping walls.

  2. Step 2

Allow comfort to guide your decision. See if you're able to rest your head easily against the back of the chair. Check that it's wide enough to allow you to rock a baby (if that's what you'll be using it for) and that the armrests provide good elbow support. Look for chairs that offer lumbar support. Make sure the chair provides both the flexibility and the firmness you want.

  3. Step 3

Select a rocking chair made of durable materials and high quality construction. Rockers upholstered in leather or microfiber fabrics wear well and are easy to clean. Look for sturdy, interlocking parts that aren't simply glued together.

  4. Step 4

Check the pitch of the rocker. The chair should move evenly and smoothly without tipping over. If the chair stops rocking a few seconds after a single push or if you feel like you're going to turn over when rocking, keep shopping.

  5. Step 5

Choose a style that matches your home. Rockers come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Wooden chairs can be unfinished, stained or painted, while rocker recliners have ample cushioning and modern or traditional fabrics. Pick a rocker that blends well with the surrounding décor.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan to use your rocking chair to lull a new baby to sleep, check for squeaks and groans as you "test drive" the chair. A little squeak may not bother you on the showroom floor, but you'll soon change your mind when the noise wakes your sleeping little one.
