How to Align Text in InDesign

Rate: (0 Ratings)

Text is the meat and potatoes of documents created in Adobe InDesign. Once the text is on the page, you should align it so it fits well within the frame. InDesign allows you to align text vertically and horizontally.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Vertically Align Text

Step1
Highlight the frame by clicking anywhere inside of it with the Selection tool.
Step2
Choose "Object" then "Text Frame Options" from the InDesign menu.
Step3
Select Top, Bottom or Justify under Vertical Justification, and then click "OK." You can preview your work by checking the preview box in Text Frame Options.
Step4
Change the Inset Spacing under Text Frame Options to put more room between the text and the frame.
Step5
Adjust the frame if necessary by selecting the middle handle at the bottom of the frame and dragging it up or down.

Horizontally Align Text

Step1
Highlight the frame by clicking anywhere inside of it with the InDesign Selection tool (or highlight the text with the Text tool).
Step2
Choose the Paragraph palette tab (or choose "Type" then "Paragraph" from the menu).
Step3
Select the desired alignment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click anywhere within a single paragraph to change its formatting rather than highlighting all of the text.
  • Instructions may vary some depending on which version of Adobe InDesign you are using.
