With certain projects, you may need to determine a specific number value for data, such as time. Excel uses a specific formula to convert data displayed as time into the proper numerical value, eliminating error and saving you the hassle of figuring it out yourself.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Enter your information into your Excel spreadsheet, using the time format you're most comfortable with. Excel recognizes a variety of time formats and will make the conversions for you.
Step2
Type out the TIMEVALUE formula in the cell where you need the result to appear. To convert the time 8:04 PM to a serial number, you would enter: =TIMEVALUE("8:04 PM"). The correct result of this formula is 0.836111.
Step3
Simplify the process by placing your mouse over the previously entered time value. Right-click and choose "Format Cells" from the list of options. This will open up a new menu. Select "Text." from the list of options. This will display your time as a serial number.
Step4
Return to a traditional time value by reselecting the "Custom" option and choosing a style for the time you would like displayed. You can choose to display seconds or leave them out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Vista users can automate the process further by choosing "Formulas" from the banner and selecting "Date and Time." A drop-down menu will appear, from which you can select the TIMEVALUE function, automating the process.
