How to Create String Art
String art was made popular during the 1970s. It allows the maker to create geometric designs and objects using string or any color, texture or size. Aside from being an art form, string art is used in math to teach lines and curves.
Things You'll Need
- Plywood
- Saw
- 5/8 inch nails
- Hammer
- String or yarn
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Hot glue gun

Pick a design you want to create. Take pencil to paper and draw your own pattern or copy a geometric shape from a photo or painting. Another options is to find a template in your local craft store.

Cut the plywood 2 to 3 inches wider than the design. The wood can be cut in a square or in the shape of the design.

Draw or place the design on the plywood.

Hammer the nails around the outline of the design. Leave most of the nails out of the wood. Most string art patterns indicate where the nails should be placed. If yours does not, place the nails 1 to 1 1/2 inches apart.

Tie the end of the string to one of the nails to begin. Stretch the string across the template to another nail. Keep wrapping the string from nail to nail in a crisscross pattern until you reach the desired coverage. Cut any excess and tie the end to the last nail.

Change the color of the string and repeat the process until you complete the desired work of art.

Slide all of the string to the top of the nails. Add hot glue to each nail to hold the yarn in place.

Paint or cover the plywood with felt or fabric for a more elegant look.
