Flag Day is celebrated on June 14, the anniversary of the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress decided that the United States should have it's own national flag in place of the British Union Jack. Whether looking for activities that you can enjoy in your home with your children, or those that can be used as learning tools in the classroom, read on for a few tips can help you organize your Flag Day celebration.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Create a tasty Flag Day cake, a fun and delicious activity you can enjoy with your children on Flag Day. Make a plain white or yellow cake and use blueberries, strawberries and whipped cream to create an image of Old Glory. You will enjoy making your cake as much as you will enjoy eating it.
Step2
Bring a U.S. flag to class and use it to organize various learning activities for your students. Consider reciting the pledge of allegiance. Teaching them why the stars and stripes mean what they do, or how to properly fold and store a flag. Discuss the reasons why a flag may be raised at half-mast.
Step3
Write patriotic Flag Day poems using each letter of the holiday. Make photo copied activity pages with the letters F, L, A, G, D, A and Y written vertically down the left side of the page. Encourage your students to write poetry related to U.S. history or the American flag, beginning each phrase with each letter in Flag Day.
Step4
Teach history at the same time as celebrating flag day by organizing a fun Flag Day quiz. You might include questions about Betsy Ross, the first American flag or what the stars and stripes represent. To keep young minds active and interested, make the quiz a group activity and include small prizes such as mini-flags, candies in patriotic colors or festive hats and accessories.
Step5
Organize your community's first Flag Day parade. Encourage local organizations and schools to participate by building floats, bringing the school marching band or flag girls or have the fire department throw candy to children. You can create a lot of enthusiasm about Flag Day and help fund the event by asking local businesses to offer donations in exchange for advertising on floats, flyers and other publicity.
