Since the 1980s, Cabernet Sauvignon has become the "go to" red wine for individuals who are interested in a full bodied but crisp taste. Prices have risen for Cabernet Sauvignon wine due to it's popularity and demand. Follow the steps below to identify a Cabernet Sauvignon-style wine.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon wine
  • Red wine glass
  • Unsalted crackers
  1. Step 1

Purchase a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon that suits the price that you are comfortable paying. Tasty versions of this popular red wine can typically be found in the $20 to $50 price range, but there are some more or less expensive ones too.

  2. Step 2

Uncork the bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon at least 1 hour before tasting the wine to allow it to come to room temperature.

  3. Step 3

Pour a small amount of wine into a glass that is meant for red wine. The glass should have a large bowl with room for the mouth as well as the nose.

  4. Step 4

Take the stem of the wine glass between the thumb and forefinger and swirl the wine. Take a sip of the Cabernet Sauvignon while inhaling the scent of the wine. Let the wine sit in your mouth and flow to the back of the tongue to get the full taste.

  5. Step 5

Identify the different flavors that distinguish a wine as a Cabernet Sauvignon, typically black currant, black raspberry and ginger. Oak is also a flavor commonly found in this wine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eat unsalted crackers to cleanse the palate if you are tasting more than one variety of Cabernet Sauvignon.
