Simple tools, like a sand wedge, turn sand castle building into an art form. Constructing elaborate sand castles and sand sculptures requires more than a pail, shovel and steady hands. Sand wedges rough out the sand castle's shape and provide a solid foundation for construction.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select a well-constructed sand wedge. Plastic sand wedges should be made of heavy, durable plastic. Cheap thin sand wedges break easily. Special sand sculpture construction kits include a heavy-duty sand wedge. Sand wedges can also be made from bamboo or metal.

  2. Step 2

Pile the wet sand. Always collect at least 50 percent more sand than the project will require. When piling the wet sand, try to distribute it in the very rough shape of your project. Create a broad pyramid shape first and carve out the walls, towers and moat later.

  3. Step 3

Move sand away from the center first. Pull the sand with the sand wedge, do not compact the wet sand until later. Drag the sand from the top towards the outer edges. The towers and walls should be roughed in during this stage.

  4. Step 4

Hollow out the center area. Scrape the sand from the roughed out walls towards the middle courtyard and carefully remove the excess with a bucket. The sand wedge can also be used to even out the floor by pressing the wedge into the wet sand.

  5. Step 5

Build up the foundation of the sand sculpture. The sand wedge can be used to compact the sand around the base to strengthen the overall structure but don't forget to keep the sand wet.

  6. Step 6

Set the sand wedge aside in favor of tools designed for finer details when you are ready to put the finishing touches on your sand castle.
