How to Preserve a Sand Castle

A sand castle can turn a regular slice of the beach into a work of art, but nothing ruins that sense of accomplishment more than the premature destruction of your sandy masterpiece. Here are some tips to help you preserve your sand castle and share your art with others.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan ahead. Weather can be devastating to a sand castle, so if you're heading to the beach with plans of grandeur, be sure to check the weather report. Wind and rain can spell imminent doom for a sand castle. Sunny and dry days can be bad too, so try to pick a moderate day that's slightly overcast for the best chances of preserving your castle for a while.

    • 2

Consider your location. As in real estate, location is everything when building your sand castle. In order to have your castle last long enough to build it and enjoy it a while, you need to be far enough away from the water that the tide at its highest cannot reach your castle. Don't build too far away from the water, though, because you need water to preserve your castle.

    • 3

Build a moat. Just like in medieval times, a moat is often the best protection for a sand castle. A moat can keep an incoming wave from pummeling your creation. The moat can also keep unwanted invaders such as crabs and small children from besieging your castle.

Keep spray bottles on hand. Sand and moisture are your bricks and mortar when building a sand castle. When your castle starts drying out, it will crumble and start falling apart. Give drying parts a few sprays from the spray bottle to keep them moist and keep your castle preserved.

    • 5

Take many pictures. As hard as you try to keep your masterpiece preserved, it will eventually transform back to sand on the beach. Be sure to have a camera on hand so you can document your fortress and remember it for years.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start early in the day so you will have more time to enjoy your castle before you have to leave.

  • Be sure to bring food, water and plenty of sunscreen so you can preserve yourself as well as your sand castle.

  • Don't leave your castle unattended unless you're completely done with it. Someone or something may come by and destroy it so be sure someone is watching it if you need to step away.
