Building sand castles on the beach with nothing other than your two hands and a bucket can be a fun way to spend a day. But, for the more serious sand castle builder, using the right tools creates even more fun at the beach and leaves you with an amazing sand castle. Follow these steps to buy the right tools for building killer sand castles.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy a long-handled shovel with a small scoop. Any shovel works, but one with a long handle is easiest on your back, and a small scoop assists you in creating all different-sized holes for your sand castle. A small scoop rather than a large one also allows you to create moats and pathways next to existing castles without worrying about making them topple with your big shovel.

  2. Step 2

Choose a collection of tools from common household items. Cake-decorating knives are useful for adding details to your sand castle; different shaped buckets help to add interest to your castle; a pie server and mudding knife make flat surfaces and are good for removing larger amounts of sand and creating stairs or large details.

  3. Step 3

Use your hands as tools. Your hands are the most versatile sand castle building tools because you can use them to smooth, build and pack wet sand into many different shapes.

  4. Step 4

Pick up a sand castle building kit that combines all of the tools in an easy-to-carry bag. These kits are relatively inexpensive and you can find them at many larger retail chains or online at Sand Tools. Make sure you get a kit that includes a shovel, hoe, detail shapers of different sizes and scoops of different sizes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use sticks and seashells to add details and writing to your castle walls.
