The Mac OS X version 10.5 (also known as Leopard) was released October 26, 2007, as the sixth major version of this product. It is the operating system for Apple's Macintosh line of personal computers. The following steps will show how to use the Mac OS X Leopard.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify the correct version of Leopard to install on your computer. The desktop version should be used for most personal computers while the Mac OS X Server should be installed on servers. An upgrade version is also available for new computers purchased after October 1, 2007.

  2. Step 2

Study the most obvious differences between Leopard and previous versions of Mac OS X. The desktop has been greatly revised; the menu bar, Dock and Stacks have been redesigned as well.

  3. Step 3

Use end-user features that are new to Leopard. The more popular features include Back to My Mac, which allows the user remote access to the home computer; Boot Camp, which assists in the installation of Windows XP or Vista to a separate partition; and a greatly enhanced Dashboard.

  4. Step 4

Recognize the new developer technologies in Leopard. It now provides support for 64 bit graphical user interface (GUI) applications, but existing 32 bit applications can still run without being emulated or translated. The Objective-C 2.0 runtime now includes garbage collection and Core Animation allows complex animations to be created with a small amount of code.

  5. Step 5

Observe the new Security enhancements of Leopard. These include the Application Layer Firewall (ALF), which is bound to individual processes and operates at the socket level.
