Friends envy you for your darker complexion that makes tanning a breeze, but that doesn't mean you should take precautions in the sun. UV radiation can still damage your skin, putting you at risk for premature wrinkling and skin cancer. Choose the right type of suntan lotion for your dark complexion.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that the most important thing to consider is the Sun Exposure Factor or SPF of your tanning lotion. You need both UVA and UVB protection. Experts recommend at least an SPF 15 to protect your skin for 15 times longer than no sunscreen.

  2. Step 2

Shop for suntan lotion specifically for dark complexions from skin-care companies like Nivea that make specific lotions for darker or olive complexions.

  3. Step 3

Use a higher SPF when you visit a new location with plenty of sun. You may never burn in Seattle, but things might be different on Colorado ski slopes or Florida beaches.

  4. Step 4

Describe your skin sensitivity. Darker complexions are often less sensitive, but if you know that you have sensitive skin, go with a higher SPF tanning product.

  5. Step 5

Buy a water resistant tanning lotion if you're going in the water. Apply suntan lotions at least 15 minutes before going out in the sun.

  6. Step 6

Choose a suntan lotion that moisturizes your skin while not feeling greasy. Because of your complexion, you have more options with suntan oils, lotions and gels. But remember that the sun can be very drying to any skin type.

Tips & Warnings
  • Apply suntan lotion more often in the first few days of tanning. If you've been hibernating indoors for the winter, your skin will feel the effects of the sun faster, even if you do have a dark complexion.
