You'd prefer both the oily and dry regions on your face to tan evenly, but using suntanning lotion to tan and moisturize your combination skin without making the oily areas too oily can be tricky. This article will help you accomplish the delicate task of getting a tan while properly caring for your combination skin.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cleanse your combination skin by washing your entire face with a foaming or gel-based cleanser and using an oil absorbing mask over the oily regions.

  2. Step 2

Bring your skin into further balance by treating the dry and oily regions independently. Treat the dry areas with a moisturizer rich in antioxidants and other water-binding ingredients. Treat the oily regions (forehead, nose, and chin) with a one-percent concentration cream-based BHA product. Wait for even looking skin and move on to Step 3.

  3. Step 3

Apply suntan lotion year round. Choose a suntan lotion that includes zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or avobenzone. The skin will be used to an extra product when the summer comes if it has been used year round.

  4. Step 4

Choose suntanning products that are friendly to the oily regions and use moisturizers for the drier or normal areas. If you must use an oil type product, use hazelnut, jojoba oil, almond oil, soybean oil, lanolin or musk rose oil.

  5. Step 5

Use a sunless tanning lotion, an acceptable and safe alternative to using oils and other products to bring out a tan. Manufacturers make these lotions for all skin types and by using these, you can have a tan without going into the sun, or use them to highlight or refresh face color you already have. Try a small amount in a hidden area to test how your skin handles the product.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use oil-blotting papers throughout the day to keep the oily regions from looking greasy and shiny.
  • Wear a foundation with sunscreen in it if you wear makeup daily.
  • Most dermatologist do not recommend using a tanning oil on your face due to the delicacy of facial tissue.
