The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student group, usually in high school or college, which brings all sexual orientations together. They participate in activities promoting tolerance like National Coming Out Day, but each group can decide for itself how to serve its members. Your GSA should join the GSA Network so you can exchange ideas with other GSAs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Decide on a name for your gay-straight alliance. "Rainbow Alliance" or "Project Spectrum" may draw more members than one that emphasizes sexual orientation. It may also encourage students who are questioning their sexuality to participate if they don't have to identify as gay before they're ready.
Step2
Check your school's student handbook about establishing clubs. Distribute fliers around school and at local student hang outs to get other students interested in your GSA. Establish a web presence where people can give their input.
Step3
Involve a teacher or faculty member. A teacher who's out is the best choice. Search for professors who cover gay culture in one or more of their classes.
Step4
Get parent support, especially if you're having a hard time finding someone at school who'll back up your gay-straight alliance. Parents can persuade others in the community to support gay tolerance in a way educators can't.
Step5
Select your meeting place with care. Choose a place where closeted and questioning gays feel comfortable. Consult with both group organizers and participants when to hold meetings.
Step6
Establish rules for those who show up regularly and those who might attend in the future. Make everyone feel safe and respected. Write clear guidelines about issuing warnings and banning participants.
Step7
Register with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) at their website (see link in Resources). Sign up for national events, participate in listserv discussions and get updates on what's happening with other gay-straight alliances.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ian MacGillivray's handbook will help you establish your gay-straight alliance.
  • Always post meeting minutes on your group's website for students who couldn't attend.
