Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Study ergonomics by taking classes either online or in a traditional classroom setting. Familiarize yourself with the technical terms of the industry and develop an understanding of the ergonomics and the benefits of practicing ergonomically correct work habits.

  2. Step 2

Locate a mentor in the industry. Having someone whose willing to guide you through the learning process and answer questions or concerns makes your success more likely and less stressful. Check with your human resources department or ask your instructors for guidance in finding an ergonomics specialist or consultant to start the mentoring process.

  3. Step 3

Plan on attending the National Ergonomics Convention and Expo, an annual event geared toward educating professionals on training, procedures and products available to the ergonomics consultant. Held in a different location each year, the National Ergonomics Convention and Expo is a valuable networking opportunity.

  4. Step 4

Obtain certification by applying for and passing the assessment for Certified Ergonomics Evaluation Specialist (CEES). This designation shows potential costumers that you've completed complex training and have a proven ability to spot and correct issues in the field. Holding a CEES will enhance your professional credibility and help you build a client base.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider specializing in a certain type of ergonomics, such as office ergonomics or industrial ergonomics. By creating a specialty, you carve out a niche for yourself, narrow down your classes and training and make it easier to find a mentor in your field.
