Use a Bunion Shield

If your big toe has changed shape and is beginning to curve in towards the rest of your toes, you probably have a bunion. Bunions are painful, especially when they rub against your shoes. Using a bunion shield cushions the bunion and reduces its associated pain.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy shoes that don't cramp your feet and have ample space for your toes. Tight shoes amplify bunion pain. A bunion shield won't help if your shoes are tight.

    • 2

Choose a gel bunion shield for the most relief, which you can find at most drugstores. Silicone-based bunion shields hold up to the most uses, but you can reuse any gel bunion shield.

    • 3

Put the bunion shield on your bare, clean foot by slipping the loop over your big toe and positioning the shield over the bunion. Some bunion shields also include a toe separator, which you should position between your big toe and first toe. The toe separator helps realign your big toe.

    • 4

Wear the bunion shield under your shoes and socks throughout the day. It shouldn't affect your activities at all. If it's uncomfortable, your shoes are probably too tight.

    • 5

Wash the bunion shield in warm, soapy water after use. Blot dry, or let it air dry in a place with good air circulation.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can stretch a favorite pair of shoes with a shoe stretcher if they're too tight. You can find a shoe stretcher at larger drugstores and foot specialty stores.

  • Use a bunion regulator at night to help stretch your tendons and realign your big toe.

  • If a bunion shield doesn't reduce pain, talk to a podiatrist about treatment options.
