Things You'll Need:
- Teapot
- Small strainer
- Teacups
- Yerba mate leaves
- Water

Step 1
Fill a small teapot 2/3 full with dried and shredded yerba mate leaves.

Add hot water until the teapot is full. Don't worry if some of the leaves float at first.

Wait about 3 minutes, then check to see if the yerba mate leaves have absorbed all the water. Add more water until the leaves are covered.

Place a strainer over a teacup and pour the yerba mate. Add the strained leaves back into the teapot to be used again until they no longer impart flavor to the water.

Drink yerba mate warm or cold. Add sugar or flavorings such as mint if desired.

Fill a decorative gourd (the mate) 3/4 full with dried and shredded yerba mate leaves.

Add hot water until the gourd is full. Don't worry if some of the leaves float.

Wait about 3 minutes, then check to see if all the water has been absorbed by the yerba mate leaves. Add more water until the leaves are covered.

Insert a bombilla, a metal or wooden straw with a filter on one end that will strain out the yerba mate leaves. Do this by covering the open end with your thumb and firmly thrusting the filter end into the gourd.

Sip the yerba mate through the bombilla until no liquid remains, then refill the mate with hot water.
