Step 1
Know your budget before buying. When you start buying wargame terrain, it's important to have a grasp on the financial picture, especially if you plan on building your terrain up over the course of months or years. Set a budget that lets you buy a few pieces at a time.
-
Step 2
Stick with your theme. A Civil War-era home would look wrong in the middle of your futuristic wargame scene, so pay attention to the details when buying your wargaming terrain. Many sites and stores have package deals, where you can buy a group of items that go together well and are period specific. Kobblestone, for instance, offers groups of medieval, Spanish and fantasy supplies that work really well together. If you aren't sure about something, research it first before buying it.

Step 3
Calculate how much ground you need to cover. If you plan on having a large play area, you need to choose terrain items to help you fill up the area properly. Water features and hills are easy ways to fill space. Homes and bunkers are another idea.

Step 4
Think outside the box. You don't have to buy pre-made terrain when you can create it yourself at a fraction of the cost. If you have the time, consider building terrain features yourself using craft supplies. For instance, use floral foam and moss to create realistic hills while craft rocks could serve as valuable cover during battles.
