How To

How to Buy Barbecue Cleaning Tools

The key to a good barbecue is cleaning your grill before and after you cook on it. A clean grill infuses food with a smoky flavor, reduces the chance of the food catching fire and produces thick grill marks that show off your skill at barbecuing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Invest in higher quality individual tools that last longer and are more versatile. Combo sets look like a good deal, but break more easily than individual tools. The bulk of a combo set also reduces the angles and ways the tool can be used.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a thin metal scraper to remove heavy debris and burnt on grit.

  3. Step 3

Buy a brush that comes with stainless steel bristles, which are more durable than brass bristles. You can buy replacement heads for some brushes, which are less expensive than buying a new brush.

  4. Step 4

Look for tools that increase your leverage and reduce the time you spend on cleaning your barbecue grill. Double handled brushes allow you to apply downward force onto the cleaning surface, which can reduce the number of times you have to scrub the grill grate. A double headed scrubber covers more surface and can be tilted to reach the sides of the grill rods.

  5. Step 5

Clean your grill with grill floss, which reaches the sides and underside of the grate without having to remove it. Grill floss comes with a dual sized cleaning head that fits the industry standard grilling rods.

  6. Step 6

Use grill wipes to clean debris, and then coat the grate with pure vegetable oil. The wipes stick to grill brushes for safety and are made from flame retardant material.

  7. Step 7

Get a container with a lid and a shovel to hold the ashes. Some companies sell decorative sets designed to blend in with your outdoor décor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Barbecue tools with storage hooks can hang from your grill for easy storage and convenience.
  • If you barbecue on a Teflon grill, don't use any metal or abrasive tools.
