The Sterilizer is also known as a Flying Hawaiian and is a standard landing in Freestyle Motocross (FMX). It was first landed by Clifford Adoptantante and is a trademark of Trevor Vines. The following steps will show how to do the FMX Sterilizer Trick.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice landing with either foot off the pegs. Once you are comfortable with one leg, you can progress to landing with both feet free. This will allow you to feel the loss of control that your legs provide and make corrections without your legs.

  2. Step 2

Put one leg through the handlebars between your hands while keeping both hands on the grips. Once you are able to do this on level ground, practice landing in that position.

  3. Step 3

Place both legs through the handlebars without taking either hand off the grips at any time. Make sure you can do this quickly and cleanly on level ground before attempting it in the air. One of the biggest dangers with the Sterilizer is landing before you can complete the movement.

  4. Step 4

Observe the final position of the Sterilizer. Both legs are extended in front of the bike across the handlebars and the rider is sitting on the bars and gas tanks when landing.

  5. Step 5

Compare the Sterilizer with a Bar Hop. They are the same trick except, in the Bar Hop, the legs are brought back into the normal riding position.

Tips & Warnings
  • FMX tricks are dangerous and may result in severe injury or death. No FMX trick should be attempted without proper supervision and protective gear at all times.
