Pianos last a lifetime. Any old seat will do for playing the piano, but the right type of piano bench can increase the comfort of the pianist, plus contribute to the décor of a room. Choose the best piano bench for you and your piano by following these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what size piano bench you need. Most adults can sit comfortably on a regular bench that is 19- to 20-inches high. But for children or taller than average adults, look into an adjustable height piano bench.

  2. Step 2

Choose a piano bench with a padded seat. Thick foam padding makes extensive sitting at a piano much more comfortable.

  3. Step 3

Consider whether you need storage space. Many piano benches open to hold sheet music and music books. If you choose a bench that opens, know that the more durable full-length hinges resist cracking in the bench.

  4. Step 4

Match your piano bench to your piano and the décor of your room. Classic benches come in a variety of wood choices, including mahogany and rosewood. If you own a digital piano, consider a metal piano bench for a modern look.

  5. Step 5

Select seat length and width for special needs you or your pianists may have. Although an average bench is 30-inches long and 14-inches wide, you can buy smaller or larger seats to fit your needs.

  6. Step 6

Figure how much you're willing to spend on a seat. Piano benches come in a variety of prices to fit every budget, so list the features you consider most important.
