A two-color start stitch is an easy pattern for the beginning knitter. Working with alternating colors of yarn allows you to create a star pattern using only knit stitches and yarn overs. This stitch can be used to create beautiful scarves, sweater or afghans.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • Yarn in two colors
  1. Step 1

Cast on any multiple of 6 stitches in the lighter yarn you are using for your two-color star stitch. Whether you use 6, 12, 18, 54 or more stitches, working in multiples of three ensures the two-color star pattern will work out nicely.

  2. Step 2

Continuing with the lighter yarn, purl the first row.

  3. Step 3

Work the second row with the same color. Knit two, yarn over, knit three, pass the first of the three knit stitches over the second and third stitches and repeat from the yarn over. End the row with one knit stitch.

  4. Step 4

Purl the third row with the darker colored yarn.

  5. Step 5

Using the same color, knit one, knit three, pass the first of the three knit stitches over the second and third stitches and do a yarn over. Then repeat from the first yarn over. End the row by knitting two stitches.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 until your knitted piece reaches its desired length.

  7. Step 7

Cast off the last row and admire the lovely two-color star stitch piece you have created.

Tips & Warnings
  • A yarn over is done by bringing the yarn to the front of your work, over the right-hand needle and around to the back. Then knit the next stitch.
