This method of binding off is for projects that use a rib pattern. It creates a stretchy edge by using a tapestry needle to cast off the stitches. This edge also has a professionally knitted look. Follow these steps to bind off in kitchener rib in knitting.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Knit all the knit stitches and slip all the purl stitches in the last two rows of the project to prepare to cast off. Keep the yarn in front of the purl stitches that you slip.

  2. Step 2

Cut the yarn leaving a length about three times the width of the project to bind off with.

  3. Step 3

Slip a tapestry needle onto the yarn.

  4. Step 4

Insert the tapestry needle into the first stitch from front to back, or left to right. If the second stitch is a knit stitch, insert the tapestry needle into both stitches and slip them off the knitting needle.

  5. Step 5

Slip the tapestry needle into the purl stitch from left to right, or back to front, and leave the stitch on the knitting needle. Pull the yarn tight.

  6. Step 6

Insert the tapestry needle into the last knit stitch that you slipped off the knitting needle from right to left. At the same time, insert the tapestry needle through the next knit stitch on the knitting needle and pull the yarn tight.

  7. Step 7

Insert the tapestry needle into the same purl stitch again--from right to left this time. Pull the yarn tight and let the two stitches, the purl and the knit, slide off the knitting needle.

  8. Step 8

Repeat Steps 5 through 7 until all the stitches have been bound off.

Tips & Warnings
  • This technique is best for 1x1 ribbing but can also be used for 2x2 ribbing. Simply count the two stitches as one when following the steps.
