How to Bind Off in Shaker Knitting

Binding off in shaker knitting requires that the stitches are cast off the way that they lie on the needle. This creates an edge that matches the pattern. This type of bind of stretches easily and is a great technique for areas in a project that are going to be under a lot of stress. Read on to learn how to bind off in shaker knitting.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Cast off a knit stitch by knitting the stitch.

  2. Step 2

    Cast off a purl stitch by purling it.

  3. Step 3

    Cast of a yarn over by knitting it together with the knit stitch beside the yarn-over. This knit stitch can occur before or after the yarn-over so pay attention to the pattern to know when to knit the two stitches together.

  4. Step 4

    Slip the first stitch over the second stitch when you have two stitches on the right-hand needle knitted, or purled, according to the pattern.

  5. Step 5

    Continue binding off in pattern and slipping the previous stitch over the next one you bind off until there is only one stitch left.

  6. Step 6

    Cut the yarn, leaving a 6- to 8-inch tail.

  7. Step 7

    Pull the tail through the last stitch and pull tightly to secure it. All the stitches are now bound off.

Tips & Warnings
  • If a stronger edge is need for the project, knit the last row not in the pattern by alternating knit and purl, and knitting the yarn-overs, before binding off. Bind off in pattern and by knitting the yarn over stitches together.
