How to Bind Off With a Crochet Hook in Knitting

Many knitters use a crochet hook to bind off because the size of the hook determines how tight or loose the edge of the project is. This gives a lot of control over the finished edge. For a normal edge, use a crochet hook that is the same size as the knitting needles you are using. For a stretchier bind off, use a larger crochet hook. Insert the crochet hook into the first stitch on the left hand needle the same way you would if you were to knit the stitch.

    • 2

Wrap the yarn around the crochet hook from back to front.

    • 3

Slip the loop on the crochet hook down through the stitch.

    • 4

Let the stitch on the left hand needle slide off. You have one stitch on the crochet hook.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 1 through 4. You now have two stitches on the crochet hook.

    • 6

Insert the tip of the left hand needle into the first stitch that you made on the crochet hook.

    • 7

Slip the stitch over the second stitch and let it slide off the needle. You have bound off one stitch.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 5 through 7 until only one stitch is left on the crochet hook.

    • 9

Cut the yarn. Be sure to leave a 4 to 6 inch tail.

Pull the yarn through the last stitch and pull the stitch tight. This securely ties off the yarn.

    • 11

Weave the ends of the yarn into the completed project.
