Wearing a prom dress to the turnpike will definitely stir-up a lot of attention but is probably not the best choice for attire. Originality and creativity can be employed while dressed fit to compete and stay uninjured. Read on to learn how to dress for vert.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Sport a pair of comfortable long shorts that fit well. Range of motion is very important and can be limited by tight clothing. Pants can limit your knees and hips from moving or slow your movement. Cargo shorts are a good choice. Make sure they will not fall off while in motion.

  2. Step 2

Wear a cotton T-shirt, short or long-sleeved. Cotton is best because it allows for good range of motion, is comfortable and absorbs sweat. Your shirt choice is an opportunity to make a personal statement. Choose a good logo or slogan to represent yourself well while on the turnpike.

  3. Step 3

Pull on a pair of socks to help with sweat absorption from legs and feet. This also helps to preserve the life of the shoes. Wear colorful socks or patterned socks for an alternative look.

  4. Step 4

Invest in comfortable, close-toed shoes that will not fall off but will allow your feet to feel the board and provide good traction. Shoes with a lot of padding, like running shoes are a bad idea and could lead to spraining your ankle and a higher frequency of misses.

  5. Step 5

Use accessories minimally. Accessories should not fall off, get caught on arms and legs or impede movement. Sunglasses, wristbands, gloves and belts are great options.

  6. Step 6

Prevent breaks, sprains and concussions by wearing a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads. Buy a quality helmet that properly fits for optimal protection. Don't buy into the lie that it's not cool to wear safety gear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear whatever colors you want. Matching is optional. This is not a fashion contest and most "vert-ers" will appreciate a laid-back approach to clothing choices.
  • Bring a hoodie for in-between sets and temperature changes.
