A meal worm feeder can be used to attract birds to your yard. If birds are offered food they will set up home in or near your yard because birds nest close to their food supply. You can make a meal worm feeder with things you likely have around your house already. Just follow these steps to learn how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Plastic container
  • 1-inch thick board
  • Galvanized nails
  • Hammer
Step1
Scrub a plastic container. Empty margarine or butter containers work best. The sides must be straight.
Step2
Fasten the cleaned container to a 1-inch thick board using a 1/2-inch long galvanized nail. If the nail is too long it will protrude out the other side, posing harm to the birds.
Step3
Fix the meal worm feeder to a pole. You can nail it to a wooden post or secure it to a fence. The area should be easily accessible to birds and out of reach of cats or other predators.
Step4
Fill the meal worm feeder with large amounts of meal worms. You can purchase meal worms from your local pet store or bait shop.
Step5
Watch the birds eat from your meal worm feeder. If you don't see any birds after a couple of days move it to a different location. It could be that it is hard to see or the birds are wary of the location.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're securing the meal worm feeder on a post make sure that it's high enough so the birds aren't threatened by cats.
