Look for a Loggerhead Shrike during the breeding season in North America from south-central Canada south through the United States and Mexico. In the winter months, you'll find the Loggerhead Shrike throughout the southern half of the United States and Mexico.

Take note of the size of the Loggerhead Shrike. These birds are medium-sized shrikes, ranging from 8 to 9 inches in length. They have wingspans ranging from 11 to 13 inches and weigh approximately 1.25 to 2 oz.

Observe the Loggerhead Shrike's appearance with pale gray underparts, dark gray upperparts, a white throat and a black mask around its eyes. The rounded wings are black with some white patches. Their long, black, fan-shaped tails have white edges and their bills have a slight hook at the tip.

Listen to the sounds of the Loggerhead Shrike. Their song contains a variety of musical notes and trills in a repeating pattern. Their call is harsher sounding and resembles a scream.

Watch the Loggerhead Shrike in flight. This bird flies low with rapid wing beats.
