Step 1
Look for a Limpkin in its preferred range and habitat. In North America, Limpkins live only in Florida. They also live in Central and South America. Find Limpkins near freshwater marshes and swamps near rivers, ponds and lakes.
-
Step 2
Marvel at the size of a Limpkin that ranges in height from 25 to 29 inches. The Limpkin has a wingspan of 40 to 42 inches, and they weigh between 31 and 46 oz.
-
Step 3
Pay attention to the appearance of the Limpkin. They have long dark legs, a long neck and a long bill. The bill is yellowish in color with a darker tip and a slightly curved overall shape. Limpkins are brown with white spots throughout their bodies. The face and neck area have smaller white spots, however. The Limpkin's wings have a broad shape and the tail is fan-shaped. Both the wings and the tail have a bronze hue.
-
Step 4
Listen for the loud call of the Limpkin. This call sounds like a scream or a loud cry repeated in succession, between four to 10 times. The Limpkin mainly makes its calls at night.
-
Step 5
Watch the Limpkin in flight. Limpkins have a direct flight pattern consisting of a short glide alternating with rapid wing beats. The up movements of the wings happen quickly, whereas their downward wing movement is slower.
