Excel's CountBlank function counts the number of empty cells in the specified range. The CountBlank function syntax is CountBlank(range), where range is a range of cells of the form cell_1:cell_2 from which the blank cells will be counted. The following steps will show how to use Excel's CountBlank function.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Understand what cells will be counted. Cells that contain formulas that return "" are counted, but cells with zero values will not be.
Step2
Start Excel and display a blank workbook for testing purposes. Enter apples in A1, pears in A2, leave A3 blank and enter oranges in A4. Select B2 as the cell to display the results.
Step3
Enter =CountBlank(A1:A4) in B1 and exit the cell. The formula you just entered will be replaced by 1. A3 is the only blank cell in the specified range.
Step4
Generate the formula automatically. Click the ribbon and select the "Formulas: tab. Click the "More Functions" item and then select "Statistical" to display the function drop-down list. Select "CountBlank" from the list to display the "CountBlank" dialog box and click the button at the end of the "Range" line to return to the spreadsheet.
Step5
Click and drag cells "A1 to A4" on the spreadsheet. Select "A1" and hold the mouse button while you move the cursor over cell "A4." Release the mouse button. Click the button at the end of the range line to return to the "CountBlank" dialog box. Click the button marked "OK" and watch a "1" appear in cell B2.
