Being educated about ancient coral reefs and how they are affected by the actions of human beings is the most important step in protecting these incredible and beautiful ecosystems. Combine education with fun to make learning about coral reefs an exciting experience. Read on to learn how to teach children about coral reefs.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plan a visit or field trip to a coral reef if you live near one. In the United States, coral reefs can be found in Hawaii and Guam. If you live in a state with an aquarium, call to ask if they have a coral reef exhibit and if they do, arrange to spend a day touring it.

  2. Step 2

Ask children to think about the future of coral reefs. Pretend that it's the year 2050 and ask children to describe what will happen to coral reefs if we work to preserve them, and what will happen if we allow them to deteriorate. Help children research the environmental problems affecting coral reefs, and discuss how they can help to preserve the reefs.

  3. Step 3

Have children write about reefs. Ask older children to write and illustrate a book that can be used to teach younger children about coral reefs. Younger children can create an informative coloring book about coral reefs and their inhabitants. Children of any age can write a poem about coral reefs and share their poetry with their family and friends.

  4. Step 4

Assist children in creation of a coral reef mural. Include the wide variety of animals found in a coral reef and the vivid colors. Display the mural for others to see. Children can also make a coral reef poster that will teach others about the coral reefs. Ask neighborhood businesses or libraries to display the posters.
