Examine the color of the monkey's hair. Spider monkeys generally have a dark coat and a light colored chest and stomach area.

Determine the height and weight of the monkey. Spider monkeys normally are 12 to 24 inches tall and weigh 13 to 17 lbs.

Measure the monkey's tail. Spider monkeys have a tail that is twice their body length.

Approach the monkey and look at the pigmentation of the face. Spider monkeys have pale skin around their eyes and mouth.

Assess the area the monkey is located. Spider monkeys live in Central America, the northern and central parts of South America, west of the Andes and at the Central Equator.

Analyze the forest area where the monkey is located. Spider monkeys need large areas of unbroken forest for optimal survival.
