If you are looking to add a few decorative details to a room or give a gift basket for a baby shower, look no further than your local craft store or garage sale to find a wicker basket. Although you can purchase them inexpensively as plain baskets, painted wicker baskets look much nicer. Follow these steps when painting a wicker basket.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Remove any old paint from your wicker basket using medium-grade sandpaper.
Step2
Clean your wicker basket with a soft-bristled brush using warm, soapy water until it is clean and free of dust.
Step3
Apply a liquid de-glosser, which will remove any grease build-up from the basket and enable the paint to stick better to the surface of the wicker.
Step4
Allow the basket to dry completely. When you are ready to paint the wicker, set up a space in a well-ventilated area in which to work. Lay drop cloths down to protect the floor and surfaces of nearby objects.
Step5
Select a can of spray paint and, using even back and forth motions, spray the wicker basket with several light coats of paint. Allow the paint to dry between each application.
Step6
Add creative details to your wicker basket by applying a freehand or stenciled design on each side of the basket. Additionally, consider using a gloss for a shiny finish or textured paints for added flare.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always follow the directions on the spray paint can to obtain the best results. Most spray paints will not work well or dry properly in weather that is either too hot or too cold.
  • Never use spray paint in an enclosed space or around heat sources.
