Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial infection in which intense attacks of coughing are accompanied by a purple or bluish face, mucus in the lungs, vomiting and anxiety. Whooping cough can be dangerous, particularly in young children and the elderly, and should be treated by a medical profession; however, a few natural medicines can help shorten a bout of whooping cough and help you cope with the symptoms. Read on to learn how to treat whooping cough with natural medicine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Osha root
  • Marshmallow root
  • Slippery elm throat lozenges
  • Honey
  • Grape juice
  • Raisins
  1. Step 1

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil, add 1 tbsp. of osha root and 1 tbsp. of marshmallow root and allow the mixture to steep covered and off heat for at least 20 minutes. Drink one cup of this soothing tea at least three times a day to help expel mucus and limit coughing attacks caused by whooping cough.

  2. Step 2

Use slippery elm throat lozenges as often as necessary to help soothe a painful cough. Slippery elm lozenges are readily available in most health food stores and often contain licorice root as well, another natural medicine that can be beneficial in the treatment of whooping cough.

  3. Step 3

Mix 1 tbsp. of raw honey into 1 cup of fresh grape juice and drink two or three times a day to help treat whooping cough. Grapes are a natural expectorant and will help eliminate mucus in the lungs, while honey has natural antibacterial properties that can help treat the bacterial infection that causes pertussis.

  4. Step 4

Make a natural cough medicine by grinding 7 tbsp. of raisins and placing them in a small saucepan. Add 7 tbsp. of honey and cover the mixture with water. Simmer the raisins and honey until it acquires a thick sauce-like consistency. Store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator and take 1 tbsp. each night before bed.

  5. Step 5

Eat an all fruit diet to help combat whooping cough. Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals that the body needs to heal. They are easy to digest and will help the body to eliminate toxins and bacteria present due to pertussis.

on 7/17/2009 An all fruit is not the best thing for this disease.
Fruit is high in sugar (fructose) which can decrease the white blood cell count and impede recovery. It is also cold and damp and may exacerbate the cold, damp nature of this disease (mucus overload). Lastly fruit is not high in minerals as suggested, whereas vegetables are. A diet for immunity should include vegetables, broths, small amount of fruit and simple proteins (like fish and eggs) to aid the recovery.
