How to Make Sand Dough

Kids love the beach. If there's not a sandy beach nearby, make a little sand at home for your kids to play with. Sand dough has a nice consistency and feel and kids love playing and creating designs with it. The following steps will show you two ways to make sand dough.

  • Large container
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup white glue
  • 2 cups fine sand
  • Large saucepan
  • 4 cups fine sand
  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp. and 1 tsp. of cream of tartar

  1. No-Cook Sand Dough

      Measure out 2 cups of white flour into a large bowl or container.

      Add 2 cups of water and 1 cup of white glue to the flour. You can purchase large amounts of white glue at crafts stores or at department stores in the crafts department.

      Blend all the ingredients together well with a large spoon.

      Put 2 cups of fine sand into the mixture. You can find plenty of sand at the beach, or you can purchase bags of sand in large amounts at home improvement stores or building centers.

      Mix until the consistency is that of dough. Knead the dough with your hands until it is thoroughly mixed.

      Insert a bit more flour or water if you need to change the consistency of the dough and continue to knead.

    Cooked Sand Dough

      Measure out 4 cups of fine sand into a large saucepan.

      Add 2 cups of cornstarch and 1 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. of cream of tartar.

      Stir 3 cups of hot water into the pan.

      Set the heat to medium and cook the mixture, stirring continually until there is total water absorption and the mixture is too rigid to stir. Add a little more water or corn starch to change the consistency if you need to.

      Remove from the heat and allow the dough to cool.

      Knead the dough when it is cool to the touch.

  • Use sandbox molds or moon sand molds to make sand castles and designs with sand dough.
