The monkey vault is a standard move in the art/sport/lifestyle of parkour. It entails a leap across a rail, fence-top or similar obstacle, using your hands to propel your body forward and vault over the top. It's a tricky move, but becomes fairly easy once you are sufficiently practiced at parkour.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Approach the obstacle at a mid-trot, keeping your limbs loose and flexible as you move towards it.

  2. Step 2

Plant your feet about a yard away from the obstacle, bending slightly at the knees to get a good push-off. You want your feet to be firmly on the ground, but ready to lift off as soon as you begin the monkey vault.

  3. Step 3

Leap forward and upward, stressing your height over the obstacle as much as your distance across it. As you do so, lean forward, tuck your feet up and pull them between your outstretched hands. You want your feet to be as tucked as closely into your body as possible so that they clear the obstacle without catching on the top.

  4. Step 4

Plant both of your hands firmly on the top of the obstacle. If it has a flat surface, lay your palms flat against it. If it is a bar or railing, grip it firmly enough to support your weight, but not so firmly that you cannot easily let go of it when you complete the monkey vault.

  5. Step 5

Feel your feet pull over the obstacle between your hands and guide the momentum through them, preparing yourself to follow after them.

  6. Step 6

Pick a landing spot on the other side of the obstacle with your eyes, and stay locked on it as you perform the monkey vault.

  7. Step 7

Release your hands as the momentum pulls you over the obstacle and your weight is shifted from them to your body.

  8. Step 8

Point your toes and land on the balls of your feet, flexing your knees to absorb the energy of the impact. Keep your legs loose and flexible in the moments before the landing, preparing to let them support you without making them stiff or rigid.

  9. Step 9

Shift the momentum of your body forward while you land, allowing yourself to move in that direction. This will allow you to move smoothly into your next parkour maneuver after you perform the monkey vault.

Tips & Warnings
  • Parkour moves require a sufficient athleticism, in addition to taking time to stretch and warm up properly before you undertake them. Make sure you are thoroughly prepared before you perform a monkey vault, and don't simply "give it a try."
