Things You'll Need:
- Video recorder
-
Step 1
Set up a video recorder to tape your parkour jump. This step isn't necessary, but it will help you study your technique and identify areas which are in need of improvement.
-
Step 2
Stand on the ground, feet flat. You should be able to perform a parkour jump from no height at all before you perform it from a height where you might fall and injure yourself.
-
Step 3
Jump upwards as well as forwards. The gut instinct is to put all your energy into forward momentum in order to cross the distance. In parkour, however, you also need lift to clear whatever obstacles are in your path, as well as a certain amount of arc to make a proper landing.
-
Step 4
Stretch out your body to its fullest extension as you jump. Throw your arms forward and invest every inch of your body into the jump.
-
Step 5
Contract your body once you get into the air. Tuck your knees into your chest and move your arms forward. This not only decreases wind resistance, but keeps your limbs loose and flexible as you prepare to perform the landing.
-
Step 6
Focus on your landing point. Look for the precise spot where you intend to land and aim for that spot. Don't take your eyes off of it as you come down from your jump.
-
Step 7
Land on the balls of your feet, pointing your toes and allowing your legs to bend to absorb the impact. Allow your body weight to shift forward, transferring the momentum ahead of you so that you land smoothly and can fluidly perform the next parkour maneuver.
-
Step 8
Increase your distance traveled and the heights you can reach with your jump as you improve. You can also perform jumps from gradually higher points, being careful to stay within your skill range and not taking unnecessary risks with your safety.
