How to Stand up on a Boogie Board

While most boogie boards cannot withstand the pressure of stand-up riding, you can perform drop-knee riding, which involves kneeling on the board with one foot placed at the nose. This advanced maneuver should be attempted after you have become proficient at riding your boogie board, and after you select a boogie board that is rigid enough to provide the proper amount of stability.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large boogie board
  • Leash
  1. Step 1

Choose a boogie board that is large enough to support your weight when you practice stand-up or drop-knee maneuvers. The board should rise at least a couple of inches above your belly button when set on its tail. A board containing a polypropylene core and rigid "stringers" running from front to back will provide the greatest amount of stability and balance as well.

  2. Step 2

Ensure that you are proficient at prone riding before you attempt a stand-up maneuver on a boogie board. You should know how to perform a proper cutback (reversing the board back into the wave for more propulsion) and a bottom turn (controlling the direction of the boogie board as you move from the top to bottom of the wave) before getting up on your knees.

  3. Step 3

Start the stand-up maneuver by catching a wave in the prone position while your boogie board begins to speed up with the wave. Grab the rails of the board with both hands and get on your knees in a steady, fluid motion.

  4. Step 4

Use your left palm to apply pressure to the left side of the board while you bring your left foot toward the nose.

  5. Step 5

Move your right hand to the right side of the board, just before the nose, and steady your balance. Continue to apply a steady amount of pressure to the board with your left hand.

  6. Step 6

Place your right foot just off the edge of the board into the water, where it will act as a rudder and stabilize your board.

  7. Step 7

Try to stand up on the board once you have mastered the drop-knee maneuver. Ensure that your body size will not damage your board when you stand. Place both feet on the board at the exact same time, with one near the nose and the other near the tail.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice the stand-up maneuver on waves that are relatively flat and provide an easy takeoff, as opposed to waves that are hollow and tubular.
