Things You'll Need:
- Helmet
- Elbow and knee pads
- Gloves

Step 1
Slow down before you maneuver through switchbacks on your mountain bike. You will move through the curve much more efficiently if you slow your bike down to the right speed, as opposed to entering the curve recklessly and being forced to stop suddenly. Unless you are familiar with the specific switchback, always take the time to see through the end of the curve if possible.
-
Step 2
Keep to the uphill side of switchbacks, if you can, as this will allow you to navigate a wider arc as you move through the curve. This will also help you avoid a collision with any obstacles that might be present as you ride through the apex of the curve.
-
Step 3
Shift your body weight slightly toward the rear of your bicycle when you maneuver through switchbacks. At the same time, rotate your pedals so that the foot along the outside edge of the curve is straight down. This will help you to prevent your foot from hitting the ground as you maneuver through the abrupt curve.
-
Step 4
Lean into the curve to the point where you are almost falling, and ease off the brakes. This move requires faith in your skills, as well as your mountain bike. At this point, you may want to lift the foot facing the inside of the curve off its pedal slightly, in case you need to push off the ground.
-
Step 5
Pass through the apex of the switchback on your mountain bike. Once you have navigated through the tightest part of the curve, release your brakes completely, return your bike to its upright, balanced position and continue to accelerate.
