Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Overgrip tape (found at sporting goods or tennis specialty stores)
- Tennis racquet
Step1
Remove a small amount of backing from the tape adhesive. Removing too much of the backing may cause the grip adhesive to stick to itself as you are applying it.
Step2
Hold the tennis racquet head against your thigh or abdomen to keep it stable while applying the grip.
Step3
Attach a small amount of the grip (adhesive side down) to the bottom, or "butt," of the racquet handle. Hold this portion of the grip in place with your left thumb if you are right handed, or vice versa.
Step4
Begin to slowly remove more backing from the adhesive underside of the grip and wind the grip once around the handle. You'll be winding clockwise if you're right handed, and counterclockwise if you're a lefty. Ensure that the top of your overgrip is even with the base of your handle.
Step5
Continue wrapping the grip around the handle, angling upward slightly and overlapping each layer by 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Make sure you are holding the overgrip taut as you apply it so that it is smoothly secured, without lumps or gaps.
Step6
Apply the last bit of overgrip adhesive to the handle rim when you reach the end of your handle (closest to the head). Use the supplied finishing tape to secure the overgrip and prevent it from coming unwound.
Step7
Replace the overgrip regularly, as it will become gummy with dirt buildup and prolonged use. There is a fine line between a handle that is easy to grip and one that is too sticky to manipulate properly.
