When it comes to Cinco de Mayo fiestas in the United States, Los Angeles may have the biggest, but San Diego has the longest and most culturally rich celebration. Those who attend can enjoy revisiting the original reason for Cinco de Mayo, which is the historic Battle of Puebla in 1862. Of course, the Fiesta Cinco de Mayo in San Diego's Old Town offers great food, music and dance, as well.

Things You'll Need:

  • Schedule of events
  • Map of Old Town San Diego
  1. Step 1

Decide which day you'd like to attend. Saturday and Sunday feature different lineups of performers. The re-enactment of the Battle of Puebla usually happens twice a day on both days of the event.

  2. Step 2

Bring the kids along to the Fiesta Cinco de Mayo in San Diego. The city makes sure to keep kids entertained with an entire stage and "village" devoted to them.

  3. Step 3

Allow plenty of time to see what's happening at any one of the four stages, as well as at the Seeley Stables performance arena, where the re-enactments are done and equestrian shows are featured. Check the schedule at Fiesta Cinco de Mayo to confirm (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Plan to eat well at the Fiesta Cinco de Mayo in San Diego. The holiday centers around great Mexican food such as chile rellenos and drinks such as margaritas, and this particular event is no exception. In fact, an entire food court is devoted to keeping the crowds fed.

  5. Step 5

Dance! The fiesta features traditional mariachi, cumbia and contemporary Latin jazz, as well as dancers, battle reenactors and mucho mas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid driving to the celebration, if possible. San Diego's Metropolitan Transit Service offers all the public transportation options you need at MTS bus routes (see Resources below).
  • Though it was declared a day to remember the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo, for many people, means simply a day to drink a lot of Mexican beer. Be aware of this fact and plan your celebration to include a designated driver if you're driving. Beware, as well, of other drivers who may be impaired.
