Instructions

  1. Make a Handmade Goodbye Card

    • 1

Gather your materials. Construction paper is the best bet for making a homemade card, since it is durable and is available in a wide variety of colors. Check your local arts and crafts store for any decorative materials you might want to add.

    • 2

Locate pictures of you and your friend. Since you will be cutting and gluing these pictures, make sure that you have copies of them. One of the best ways to get pictures is to locate them on a personal computer, then print them out using photo paper.

    • 3

Tailor the pictures to your card. Feel free to use scissors to cut the photos into unique shapes, such as an "exploding" border or a cloud-shaped border. Make sure, however, that you do not cut into the parts of the picture you want displayed, such as yourself or the recipient of the goodbye card.

    • 4

Add decorations, such as glitter or pipe cleaners. Let your creative side shine though, and apply whatever you think works best on the card.

    • 5

Write a caption and a personal note. The personal note is more important than the caption, although the urge to make the caption memorable is hard to resist. However, the personal note is what the person will remember most, so put more thought into it.

Make a Goodbye Card Using a Computer

    • 6

Determine the best software to use. Most standard computers come with two or three ways to make a card, so select the program that you think will work best. Be sure to take into account such options as a pre-made design, a "wizard" program that will help you start creating the goodbye card, and the ease with which you can put pictures onto the card.

    • 7

Find digital pictures of you and your friend. If you have none, contact other people who know the recipient of the goodbye card to help you. Use a USB drive to obtain copies of the pictures and transfer them to your computer.

    • 8

Design the card. Beginners should use the pre-made designs and creation "wizards" at first, but then experiment freely with the options that the desktop publishing software offers. If you make a choice you are unhappy with, simply undo it and try again.

    • 9

Select the type of paper to be used in printing the goodbye card. While plain white paper is an acceptable choice, stationery may also be used, and provide a classier touch. Be sure to consider the color of the paper itself, as it may clash with the color scheme of the card.

    • 10

Sign the card if you desire.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't worry about your artistic ability. Making a goodbye card is less about how nice it looks and more about the time and effort that went into it. A goodbye card made by a kindergarten student has just as much personal significance to its recipient as a card made by a professional graphic artist.
