There are two basic kinds of ice cream makers--an automatic or electric ice cream maker and a manual ice cream maker. Neither type of machine is difficult to use. Because each manufacturer has a slightly different design, read the directions carefully to learn about how to use the ice cream maker you have chosen.

Things You'll Need:

Learn to Use Your Electric Ice Cream Maker

  1. Step 1

Read the instructions for your ice cream maker before you do anything else. Some ice cream machines use ice and rock salt and some do not. Make sure you know what type of machine you have before starting.

  2. Step 2

Keep the bowl of your electric ice cream maker in the freezer when not in use. To produce a truly frozen dessert, the bowl must be frozen for at least a day before you want to make a batch of ice cream.

  3. Step 3

Plug in the ice cream maker and turn it on before you start to add ingredients.

  4. Step 4

Add the cream, sugar and vanilla extract to the ice cream maker slowly through the opening at the top. Replace the cover securely when you are finished adding the ingredients.

  5. Step 5

Listen for any changes in the motor or paddles while the ice cream maker is running. It may start to slow down when the ice cream is sufficiently frozen.

  6. Step 6

Turn off your automatic ice cream machine before taking out the ice cream.

  7. Use a Manual Ice Cream Maker

  8. Step 1

Put the specified amount of crushed ice and rock salt in your manual ice cream maker. The instruction booklet should tell you how much you need of each of these items. The holding area for these ingredients may be a tube in the middle or a compartment at one end of the machine.

  9. Step 2

Pour the ice cream ingredients into the main compartment of your manual ice cream maker.

  10. Step 3

Replace the covers on the ice cream maker and be sure they are completely sealed. If the covers are not secure, the ice cream mixture will leak out during the rolling process.

  11. Step 4

Shake or roll the ice cream maker according to the directions for your specific model. You may need to check the contents from time to time to see if they are freezing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never force paddles, covers or other small parts of an ice cream maker into place. If it seems difficult to fit a piece into its spot, something is not right. Take the piece out, examine it to make sure nothing is broken and try it again. If your ice cream maker is not functioning properly, call the manufacturer to obtain replacement part if necessary.
